Roman Day

What a busy week…. finishing with our super Roman day!

We experienced what it would have been like in the Roman Army and marching with Mrs Wray in the hall. We explored what life would have been like in the Roman era and then designed and painted our own shields.

I hope you all have a lovely, well deserved Easter break!

Aladdin!

Well what a performance! I am so proud of everyone for all their hard work and a super performance over the last couple of days! From all the singing and dancing to the rehearsing and line learning. Everyone has been so fantastic and I hope you all enjoyed watching the show as much as I did!

The BIG Plastic Count!

A message from Mr Moore about the Big Plastic Count:

We would like you and your child to take part in the The Big Plastic Count 2024 from Monday 11th in the morning to Sunday 17th March in the evening.  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x0nQHO7Mw-k

In 2022, nearly 250,000 people from schools, households and communities across the country made The Big Plastic Count the biggest ever investigation into UK household plastic waste. It showed that nearly 100 billion pieces of plastic are thrown away in the UK each year, with hardly any of it recycled.

The rest is burned, sent abroad or ends up in landfill. We can’t recycle our way out of the plastic waste crisis.

By joining thousands of people across the country and counting all the plastic you throw away for a week, you can gather the vital evidence needed to convince UK ministers, supermarkets and big brands to lead the way at the global talks that could finally phase out plastic production for good.

It’s easy!  count as you throw!

Simply mark every piece of plastic package as you throw it away in your bin or recycling on the Let’s Count Tally Sheet

TOP TIPS

1.       Put the Let’s Count Tally Sheet up on your fridge, or near your bin or recycling.

2.       Tell everyone you live with that you’re going to be taking part and ask them to include their plastic waste in the count too.

3.       Using the Let’s Count Tally Sheet, record the different types of household plastic packaging waste you use for one week. This includes plastic going in your bin and plastic you put out for recycling.

4.       Use the Plastic ID Tool to look up plastic items if you need to.

5.       Remember to write down any piece of plastic packaging you use while out and about, then mark it on your tally sheet when you get back home.

Record your results online by 31st March using your class unique link. The platform will be able to work out each class plastic carbon footprint as well as our schools.

Our week: 01.03.2024

Welcome to March! This week we began to explore mass and measuring the weight of different objects using both grams and kilograms. We have been reading different measurements on scales and also estimating the different weights of objects around the classroom. Below is a great game you can try at home to help practice reading different scales in grams and kilograms. Click here for the game link.

We have also been thinking about our Damer’s way of being and our school values. We wanted to create some posters that reflected our thoughts and feelings about these values. Here are some off our designs:

Just a reminder that our trip to the Roman Town house is on Tuesday 5th March. Please remember a coat, snack and water bottle. We will be back at school in time for lunch at the normal time. Have a lovely, restful weekend, Miss Mansell.

Welcome back!

A rainy welcome back to the second half of our Spring term! The sun has began to shine today, hopefully it is here to stay!

This week we designed and made our own jam tarts. We practised different skills including rolling out the pastry once we had made it and cutting it using a crinkled cutter to make our tart base. I hope they were as yummy as they smelt!

We finally got outside today to measure our raised flower beds in the garden. In Maths, we have been exploring length and using millimetres, centimetres and metres. We have been estimating the length of different objects and seeing how close our estimates were to the actual length. We even challenged ourselves to convert our lengths from CM to MM or M to CM.

On Wednesday in Computing, we looked at a new programming environment: Scratch. We looked at the different components and then we had a go at writing a short program to make our ‘sprite’ move across the screen and say hello.

Keep practising the songs on Google Classroom for our upcoming performance at the end of the half term in March and have a lovely weekend, Miss Mansell

Internet Safety Day 2024

Today, is National Safer Internet Day. The children have spent time both in assembly this week and in class, discussing and learning about how to stay safe online.

The main focus of our learning has been the importance of talking to a trusted grown-up if the children come across anything they don’t like or are unsure of online. We have also looked at our SMART rules for using digital devices and the internet and the different places we can go for help. Ask your child at home about what they can remember about our discussion and for any further information or guidance about staying safe online or Safer Internet Day please visit https://www.saferinternetday.org

Our week- 02.02.24

It is already February and it has started to feel a little bit more like Spring! Hopefully the sun is here to stay!

This week in Science we have been learning about forces and magnets. We have been exploring different surfaces and which ones required the most force (Newtons) to pull a wooden block across. We found that the carpet in the cloakroom required the most force. Some of us predicted this at first because the surface feels bumpy.

In Literacy, we have been busy writing a short story inspired by the book Black Dog by Levi Pinfold. We have been using fronted adverbials, expanded noun phrases and direct speech to make our writing super! Our home learning this week is all about using speech marks to help us show when someone is speaking in our writing.

Today was the NSPCC’s number day! We had lots of fun finding out about some famous mathematicians and explored all the different ways we use maths and numbers! We went into the garden and found some different problem solving challenges, here is one below we had a look at today, can you work out how many squares there are in total?

I hope you have a lovely weekend, see you all on Monday! Miss Mansell

Super spellings

We are nearly at our spelling review week, keep on practising this week’s spellings (week beginning 29.01.24) alongside looking over the previous spellings since the start of January ready for our quiz next week.

Below is an example of our Spring 1 spelling sheet, there is a copy in your child’s reading diary. If you need a new copy, please let Miss Mansell know!
