What did she achieve in sailing? What is she doing now related to the environment?
A few years ago she wrote to Damers Eco Crew to praise the children on the work they were doing to reduce single use plastic.
Here is some information below to help start you off.
She was born in Derbyshire in 1976.
Her first experience of sailing was when she was just a child. She went out to sea on her aunt’s boat. From then on, Ellen wanted to get her own boat. So she saved her school dinner money, Brithday and Christmas money for three years and finally managed to buy her first boat.
In 1995, aged 19 years old, Ellen sailed around Great Britain on her own.
In 2003, MacArthur set up the Ellen MacArthur Trust (now the Ellen MacArthur Cancer Trust), a registered charity, to take young people, aged between 8 and 24 inclusive, sailing to help them regain their confidence on their way to recovery from cancer, leukaemia and other serious illnesses.
On 7th February 2005 she broke the world record for the fastest solo circumnavigation of the globe, a feat which gained her international renown. Her time of 71 days, 14 hours, 18 minutes 33 seconds is world record for the 27,354 nautical miles (50,660 km) covered.
She was made a Dame in 2005.
On 2 September 2010, she launched the Ellen MacArthur Foundation, a charity focusing on accelerating the transition to a regenerative circular economy. The Foundation works in three areas:
- Education – inspiring a generation to re-think the future
- Business – controlling business transformation
- Insight – the opportunity for a re-design revolution
